As we hop in and out of Winter and the temperatures continue to ‘yoyo’ it’s perfect breeding time for the pesky common cold.
When I was back in London a couple of weeks ago everyone seemed to have a cold/cough/sore throat. The cold, as we know, is easily caught, especially if you are travelling on public transport, a family member catches it or you are run down and over worked.
I write the next sentence with my fingers crossed, I really hope not to jinx myself!
I haven’t had a serious cold for a long time. Eek! said it ! It’s true though…I’ve had a little sniffle here and there but nothing like I used to get and believe me I used to get full on stinkin ‘knock you for six’ colds…OFTEN! They would be those nasty debilitating colds where I literally couldn’t get out of bed for a couple of days… high temperature, streaming nose and eyes, shivers, no energy and generally feeling very sorry for myself.
Having had the flu once I know these bad colds were definitely not the flu, that is a whole other story!
These horrible colds would last for a few weeks and always turn into a chesty cough that would linger on for a few more weeks. Such a drag and super frustrating waste of time.
So what is the magic medicine?
Apart from transitioning to a whole foods plant based diet, increasing exercise, meditation practice and less drinking (alcohol) I put it down to the magic medicine, Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
I first discovered ACV around 7 years ago when I had a sore throat that just would not budge. After trying all the medicines possible from the chemist and a spray from the doctor I turned to the internet and discovered ACV was a natural remedy for a whole host of ailments, including sore throats and colds. I got some straight away and started taking it in water.
I will say, it’s not the best tasting drink but it did the trick and my sore throat cleared up, finally!
Since then I have used ACV for prevention as well as treatment.
ACV alkalises the body whilst boosting the immune system… so as soon as I feel a bit of a sore throat or a sniffle I start to dose up on it and it generally keeps the colds away. Sometimes if I am run down then the cold may still manifest but it will never stick around for long, thanks to to the magic medicine.
ACV is not only medicine for colds, coughs and sore throats but is said to help in lowering blood pressure (alongside a healthy diet), eases arthritis symptoms, aids in digestion and can be applied topically to skin irritations.
There are various ways to take ACV. Here are a few concoctions that I have found work for me if I’m feeling any cold symptoms
1-Add 1 TBS to a tall glass of water (drink through a straw to protect the enamel on your teeth)
2-When you really need a boost, take a shot of ACV mixed with a little water.
3-Add 1 TBS to hot water with ginger root, a squeeze of lemon and a dash of cayenne pepper
4- Add a TBS to your salad dressing
Make sure when purchasing Apple Cider Vinegar you get an organic brand containing, what they call, ‘with the mother’ meaning it is is unrefined. The un pasteurised ACV will be cloudy in appearance as it contains apple sediment which is said to be the medicinal part of the vinegar. Organic ACV ‘with the mother’ contains beneficial bacteria and acetic acid to aid in healing all these various ailments and illnesses. In my experience ACV does the trick when it comes to the common cold, cough and sore throat and I hope it will for you too.
